The Santiago Military Regional Command (Korem) has deployed hundreds of soldiers to help in the wake of major flooding across Manado, North Sulawesi.
Korem information head Maj. Suwardo, speaking in Manado on Monday, said 700 personnel were involved in the clean-up in cooperation with local police officers and citizens after floods hit the city on Jan. 15, 2014. Soldiers were led by Korem commander Brig. Gen. Musa Bangun.
Until Monday afternoon efforts were focused in the Tikala Ares and Kampung Ternate village areas.
According to Antara’s observation, trash was still piled up on a number of Manado's major roads, causing traffic jams.
Joap Palilingan, a resident at Dendengan Dalam village, said the flash flood had submerged his house and swept away all of his belongings, including television, refrigerator, motorcycle and clothes.
Much of Manado’s essential infrastructure — roads, bridges and drainages — have been severely damaged. (krb)
