  • The medic said the referral hospital was working on plans to create awareness in Nyanza and more so to educate men on the importance of taking the drugs as advised.

The high number male bodies in Kisumu mortuaries is due to failure to take anti-retrovirals by HIV infected men, according to a senior medical officer.

“Men tend to fear taking drugs and do not take their treatment seriously,” said Dr Juliana Otieno, the medical superintendent at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, alarmed by the high number of dead men at the mortuaries.

“The drugs are prescribed for a lifetime and for you to survive, you have to take them,” Dr Otieno said Tuesday.

“We are going to work extra hard to avert the situation at hand and ensure that we advocate for positive attitude in men towards taking the ARVs because if they do not follow the doctor’s prescription, the aftermath is death,” she added.
