Kenya: Turkana Updates

Source: Kenya Red Cross
Country: Kenya

On 26th November 2013, the Kenya Red Cross launched integrated humanitarian activities to assist crisis-affected communities after finally gaining access to Lorgon area in Turkana. Accessibility to the area was limited as all roads were barricaded by the armed men involved in the inter-clan clashes between Pokot and Turkana.

Accessibility to healthcare remained a challenge after the ensuing standoff between the warring Pokot and Turkana communities so Kenya Red Cross will conduct rapid assessment of the population’s needs focusing on water, health and food security.

On 25th November 2013, Kenya Red Cross spearheaded a peace and reconciliation meeting with both communities, local leaders including area Pokot Senator. After the meeting Kenya Red Cross team was eventually granted access to the area to conduct rapid needs assessments and offer humanitarian assistance.

The teams recorded about 1700 people (400HH) were affected by the conflict with mothers, children and elderly being the most affected.

A distribution was then conducted by KRCS on 26th November 2013 of food donated by the Turkana County Government the consignment included 100 of bags maize, 40 bags of beans, 35 cartons of cooking fat and 20 boxes of long life milk totaling to about 400 households.
