KABUL [ACTED News] – In August 2013, flash floods devastated areas of Kabul, Afghanistan as houses and cars were washed away and over 80 people were killed. Local residents in the affected area described the floods as “a jet engine roar, or a wall of water that came crashing down the mountains without warning on Saturday morning, sweeping away entire homes.”
ACTED was able to access prepositioned food stocks so as to be ready to intervene. After conducting a rapid assessment in Surobi district in Kabul province, ACTED identified the most vulnerable families affected by the flood and conducted emergency food distributions for 610 families. This was conducted in coordination with the authorities, the World Food Programme and other UN agencies.
A number of these families have lost one or more of their loved ones and have had their homes and possessions destroyed. However through this emergency intervention, the most vulnerable families have enough food to feed their families for the next month while they begin to rebuild their livelihoods.
