(4th June 2013) - The Unity State government is set to conduct forceful disarmament across communities in an attempt to free the state from illegal guns.
The decision was made by the State Security Council headed by Governor Taban Deng Gai.
The Council has not set a time frame for the operation, but maintained that it will be conducted soon, in all the nine counties of the State.
Unity State Security Advisor, Manyiew Dak, told Radio Miraya that the initiative was aimed at restoring peace and security in the state that has been affected by cattle raids.
“At any time we will stage a forceful disarmament, we will deploy a large number of security force at county, payam and boma level to carry out the exercise,” he said.
“I urge those who have unauthorized firearms to hand them over willfully. Measures will be taken upon those who resist.”
