Thousands still need proper shelter in flood affected areas RCS chairman hands over newly constructed houses to flood victims in Goth Machi

Rahim Yar Khan : Thousands of people in flood affected areas are still without proper shelter and concrete efforts are need of the time to rehabilitate them as with the passage of time if not addressed properly the situation can be worst.
This was stated by Pakistan Red Crescent Society Chairman Major General (Retd) Ch Muhammad Nawaz Khan while addressing the handing over ceremony of “Red Crescent Homes for Homeless,” in Basti Abdul Hakeem Kobar, Goth Machi of District Rahim Yar Khan.
General Nawaz said that the PRCS being the leading humanitarian organization in collaboration with Fauji Fertilizer has constructed these houses for the victims.
He said that these houses shows the commitment of the PRCS in serving the vulnerable and its motto First to Reach and Last to Leave. He said that these reconstructed houses were built keeping in view the cultural and residential needs of the area.
The PRCS Chairman said that to cope with the challenges there is a dire need of joint sustained efforts by government authorities, international donors and aid agencies so that flood survivors can keep their families safe and healthy now, and get timely support to rebuild their livelihoods, homes and communities.
Apart from this struggle, PRCS gave a swift response during 2010 deadly floods when its volunteers provided relief assistance of worth Rs nine billion to over 4.1 million victims.
He said 2011 monsoon had also descended hitting 8.9 million people in various parts of the country. The similar response of PRCS could also be seen in those difficult times when PRCS, while fighting the deadly showers, reached among the rain victims and provided over 0.29 million people the relief goods of worth Rs 260 million in the most affected and vulnerable districts The Chairman said beside that the PRCS in collaboration with International Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), other partner national societies and local donors has rehabilitated 75,000 families in the affected areas all over the country worth PKR 1.5 billion.
Speaking on the occasion, the beneficiaries thanked the PRCS chairman for reconstruction of their mud houses into concrete houses as now they will be able to start a new life in their houses that they never dreamt for. “I am very happy as now I will no more be in a tent in this scorching heat as now I have my own house, I feel more secure and Thanks to Red Crescent for giving me the most basic need of my life,” said one of the allottee of the new constructed house.
The PRCS Chairman later distributed ownership certificates among the flood victims and also inspected the newly constructed houses where he met with the families where they expressed their feelings of appreciation for the Red Crescent.
Those who also spoke on the occasion include the representative of Fauji Fertilizer and notables of the area.
It is worth mentioning here that the total cost of the project is over RS 100 million that was sponsored by different donors to PRCS.
