Background of Situation
Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines on the 8th of November, 2013. It was one of the most powerful typhoons to ever make landfall. Government estimates state that over 14 million people were affected by the typhoon across nine regions, 44 Provinces and 575 municipalities. 1.1 million houses were damaged at the cost of 27 billion pesos and over 5,000 evacuation centers were activated in preparation for the typhoon.
Relief efforts are on-going and the need for up-to-date, accurate data on the conditions in the affected areas and populations is essential to ensuring that humanitarian interventions are planned and implemented in an effective and targeted manner.
