On October 28, a total of 159 Palestinian children were imprisoned and prosecuted in the Israeli military court system, a decrease of 11.2 percent from the previous month. There were 15 Palestinian children between the ages of 12 and 15.
In October, Israel ended a 20-month boycott of the United Nations Human Rights Council when Israeli officials participated in the Universal Periodic Review, a process where every UN member state has their human rights record reviewed before the council.
During the review, numerous UN member states, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland and others, commented on or criticized Israel’s lack of respect for international law and its systematic ill-treatment of Palestinian children in Israeli military detention.
Also in October, DCI-Palestine documented two cases involving solitary confinement of Palestinian children solely for interrogation purposes. Wasim N, 16, spent 14 days in solitary confinement at Petah Tikva interrogation and detention facility, while Amjad H, 17, spent 21 days at the same facility.
Three boys suffered severe beatings and ill-treatment in September, which led DCI-Palestine to submit complaints on their behalf in December. During arrest and transfer to Ariel police station, in separate incidents, Israeli soldiers extinguished a cigarette on 14-year-old Ali’s lip while another burned 17-year-old Hendi’s arm with a cigarette.
