Iran Earthquake 28 November 2013
This bulletin is being issued for information, and reflects the current situation and details available at this time. The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), has determined that external assistance is not required at this moment, and is therefore not seeking funding or other assistance from donors and the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies at this time.
An earthquake with the magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale rocked Southeast of Bushehr province, Iran on 28 November 2013. As per Tehran University’s Seismological Center, the earthquake struck at 17:22 local time with 65 kilometer from Bushehr province. The epicenter of the earthquake was 13 kilometer to the east of Borazjan town, center of Dashtestan city and surrounding villages are the earthquake stricken places. The earthquake happened at the depth of 5 kilometer of the ground.
So far, 38 aftershocks have been recorded in the affected areas, the biggest of which has been 4.1 on the Richter scale dated 29 November 2013.
The situation
As per latest from the field, 7people are dead and 203 persons were injured. 33 people were rescued while trapped under the rubbles, 13 persons out of them were transferred to the closest hospital and 20 were treated as outpatients. Preliminary assessments conducted by IRCS Bushehr province and city branch shows that the most affected villages are located in northern Borazjan including dehghayd, nazaragha, Doroudgah, Baargahi, Saad Abad, Raahdar, Bone Jaberi, vahdatiyeh, ziaat, and sad abad.
200 houses and shops are not useable due to the damages in Borazjan town and dehghayd village.
Red Cross and Red Crescent action
After receiving initial information, assessment teams were dispatched to the affected areas followed with search & rescue and relief teams to the reported damage fields
IRCS Relief & Rescue Organization backed by 2 relief helicopters from Khouzestan and Fars provinces supported 200 relief/rescue workers in 50 operational teams with sniffer dogs as well as rescue tools and necessary equipment in the affected areas.
1,520 people were sheltered in 20 camps. Relief items including 1300 relief tents, 2000 mouqettes and 3000 blankets were distributed among the affected people.
Tools, relief and rescue equipment have been applied in the affected areas as follows:
10 ambulances,
4 heavy vehicles
4 rescue vehicles with necessary tools
17 pick ups(4 WD)
10 back up vehicles
3 life detector sets
2 helicopters
Current situation
Search and rescue operation has been conducted and finalized. The relief operation is underway with providing health, sanitation, food and hygiene.
