Highlights
Over 7,000 schools are closed, destroyed or damaged following Typhoon Haiyan. While some schools will reopen in early December, the Department of Education has planned a four-phase national response strategy for getting all children in affected areas back to school by January 2014, with UNICEF’s support.
The Nutrition cluster estimates 1.35 million children under-five, 650,000 pregnant and lactating women across nine regions to be at risk of malnutrition. Cluster partners are primarily focusing on Regions VI (Western Visayas), VII (Central Visayas) and VIII (eastern Visayas).
UNICEF and partners completed the Inter-agency Multi-Cluster Initial Rapid Assessment (MIRA) on 25 November. Results, once verified, will be used to inform the response across priority areas.
With thanks to our donors for their generous support, UNICEF’s initial appeal of US$ 61.5 million is fully funded which caters for the immediate needs of the affected population based on early targets.
This initial appeal will be amended according to the UNICEF Response Plan covering 12 months, in line with the Inter-agency Strategic Response Plan, which is currently being developed and will cover longer-term needs based on the outcomes of the Multi-Cluster Initial Rapid Assessment (MIRA).
