(September 5th, 2013) - The continuing rise in the River Nile's water level in Bor, Jonglei state, has destroyed more than 400 houses and displaced thousands of people.
The river, which broke its banks on Tuesday, has risen more than 1.5 meters deluging areas of Panliet, Hai Machour, Lakeyak, Hai Fangak, Ziam Ziam and Pakuaw.
South Korean Military Engineers serving with the United Nation Mission in South Sudan have been involved in attempts to repair dykes and water channels.
The State Physical Infrastructure Minister, Manawa Peter Gatkouth said a two kilometer dyke that had been protecting Bor town had given way.
He warned that the situation could worsen if the water levels continue to rise, he advised people to leave the affected areas.
“The situation is very difficult, the Ministry has brought excavators and bulldozers to open up water channels in the affected areas,” he said.
“We are also urging the Commissioner of Bor County to mobilize people to evacuate because this is a very bad situation.”
The Director of Water Resources and Irrigation, Gabriel Gai Kurjil also added that the government has started treating borehole water in the affected areas.
