India: Dengue claims 40-year-old woman

PUNE: A 40-year-old woman from Satara district died of dengue in Poona Hospital on Friday, officials from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said.

The city has registered 98 confirmed cases of dengue in August, so far, the highest for a month, this year. Eight more people tested positive for dengue in Pune city on Friday. As many as 277 dengue cases have been recorded this year, so far. Among them, six have succumbed to the mosquito-borne infection till date.

Sujata Anil Mahadik, a resident of village Ninam in Padali taluka, had developed fever with chills and pain in the abdomen on August 15. "She was initially treated at a hospital in Satara, but was later moved to Poona Hospital on Friday afternoon. She died of dengue shock syndrome at 10.15am on Friday," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health (MoH), PMC.

The health department of PMC has started filing court cases against citizens and organizations who have not acted against mosquito-breeding sites on their premises despite warnings. "So far, we have filed six court cases against individuals and organizations," said Vaishali Jadhav, head of the insect control department in the PMC.

The recorded number of dengue cases has grown ever since the civic body's health department started collecting data from private hospitals this year. Earlier, the PMC used to collect the disease data only from Sassoon General Hospital and PMC-run hospitals.
