BANGUI [ACTED News] - The Central African Republic is facing a large-scale political and humanitarian crisis: violence and looting on a daily basis are forcing people out of their homes, having to flee to other areas or neighbouring countries. Waste management agencies in the capital city Bangui are not spared, which has led to the interruption and the paralysis of all waste evacuation services. After three months of activities in Bangui, ACTED’s waste management project has had an obvious impact on the city: some 670 metric tonnes have been collected, which has helped prevent serious health risks before the rainy season, and it has contributed to the local economy, by employing 120 people. Three local NGOs were also trained by taking part in awareness raising sessions. Today, waste collection is being handed back over to local constituencies in the concerned areas of the city, so they can resume management.
